Day 3 – To the Finish.

8 May

“Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

After last night’s rant I slept like a log. Just goes to show you how pouring out all your struggles on a blog and then crawling between the blankets for bed can lead to sleeping oh, so soundly. It simply helps to get things out. It genuinely does make one feel better. Like hitting the refresh button.

Today in our Whole 30 FB Group, the question was asked – Why are you doing this? What do you hope to accomplish? We all want to lose a little weight so think of something besides that.

My FB response: I’m terrible at finishing things. I see the finish line and think, well, I’m almost there, good enough and stop mid stream. This has lead to many plateaus. I want to know what it feels like to finish, to push through the plateau and see true results. If I start with my body then I believe it will translate to other areas. New level of strength and endurance and confidence in training = changes in how I see the world = new opportunities.

Disclaimer on food – If you’ve read this blog you know I experiment with a lot of different approaches to my food; Whole 30, Intermittent Fasting, zone, Paleo, Paleo-zone while standing on one foot and eating over the kitchen sink. This is all a learning process. I love to experiment and learn what works best for my strength and happiness and health. In the end, the goal is to find what works best for me. End of story. My goal with joining our lovely Whole 30 FB Group is primarily to reign in my poor habits starting with the one area where I have instant and immediate control, my consumption of calories.

The Plan for the next 3o Days – I’ll be eating paleo; no sugar, no alcohol, no cheese, no legumes, no grains. If I reach for dairy (in the form of heavy cream in my coffee) it will only be allowed if sourced from a sustainable healthy beast; farm raised grass fed goats/cows.

Most importantly, the majority of my protein will be obtained from local, grass fed, humanely raised, animals. Whether it leads to CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Meat-Share, or a simple Saturday drive to the local farm to purchase a week’s worth of proteins. Hey, it’s the season of Farmer’s Markets too so what better time to rise to the challenge! Literally, on early Saturday mornings. The plan is still unfolding and it’s glorious to consider and research and strategize recipes.

FOOD JOURNAL:

Breakfast – coffee w/ heavy cream (finishing out the last of my Trader Joe’s heavy cream…)

2:30 Lunch – Chipotle salad to go, with extra lettuce, carnitas, pico de gallo (that’d be salsa…) and that’s it. Used Olive oil and vinegar, salt and pepper for dressing.

Dinner - spaghetti squash with roasted chicken breast and Rao’s marinara sauce. So. Good. Personally, Rao’s is the best tasting and ingredients closest to the source, but it’s also crazy expensive, 8+ per bottle. Therefor I only buy when on sale and when it is, I stock up.

Post dinner snack - raw almonds and cashews and dried blueberries with added Himalayan salt. I’m concerned I’m eating way too many nuts. Like, way too many. How many? I’m afraid to actually keep track.

Finding the Why. Part II.

22 Apr

“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Friedrich Nietzsche

PART II -

I love stories of people leaving their jobs and pursuing their dreams. Love these people and their Exit Letters. Whether it is due to an unexpected and potentially devastating departure like being laid off, or just having had enough and pulling the evacuation chute;  the key is in seeing it all as one giant opportunity – like this gentleman, Richard Tseng, who compared himself to a tough old Eskimo broad.

Perhaps you just finally decide to go it on your own and start your own business, like Mr. Cake in the UK.

mr cake

These stories unite and inspire. They teach that there is indeed more life out there. Potentially the life of your dreams if you haven’t already found it. If you think about it the opportunities really are *fnn endless. You just have to jump.

I’m pretty sure I haven’t found the sweet spot yet. While I do enjoy my job and the community within which I work, there’s a deeper burning that won’t quit. It’s buried deep and it’s always there. It reminds me that the Why for my being -  my own personal elusive quan - is still out there and I just haven’t locked that sucker down yet. Not quite. Therefore I am merely existing. What is that elusive Why? What does it look like? If I had to make a list of Why Characteristics it would look like this:

  1. Connecting
  2. Creating hope
  3. Building something tangible, something good, and making a living at it
  4. The ray of light at the end of dark tunnels
  5. Being my own boss
  6. Building my dream home
  7. Living with humor

I want the knowing of that old Eskimo broad, confident and smart enough to slay the polar bear and feed the entire clan.

Benchmark Update

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien

10K ROW

4 of the 5 Benchmark workouts are complete. While we have until April 5 to submit results I’m on a strict timeline and must have all benchmarks completed by Sunday. The only thing left to do as of this morning, 1RM Back Squat as well as attempt a 300lbs. Deadlift since that too has been a long time goal.

Last night I tackled the 10K Row after Strongman and beat my last time by about a minute. PR! Amazing the things you can do when you have no time to waste.

4 of 5 Results as follows:

Benchmark WOD 1/1/13 3/31/13
1. “Fran” – RX at 65lbs. 5:24 5:19
2. 1RM Snatch 85 lbs. 105 lbs.

“A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.” ― Leonardo da Vinci

“Fran”

For Time:

21-15-9

Thrusters (95/65)

Pullups

*8 minute cap

Completed: RX at 65lbs. with ring rows. Time: 5:17. 7 second PR from January. Thank you to Andrew the strong voice in my ear that walked up and stood next to me during the 15′s and said;

‘I’m going to stand here and count each and every rep Mary, Do NOT put that bar down.’

When someone, when your coach, says things like this to you in the middle of a WOD you do exactly what they say. So I did not put that bar down and each round went unbroken in that I never lowered the bar to the ground until the round was over – even though every fiber of my muscles and joints screamed, please put the bar down.. please.

Fran is cruel and unforgiving and turns the world black. It is also oddly delightful but only when it’s over. It leaves you feeling like a deer in the headlights that was just run over and wondering how it is that you are still on planet earth. In Fran you are racing against yourself and if you let yourself get consumed you will end up pushing harder than ever thought possible only to find yourself on the other end with a faint understanding of that which you are actually capapable.

Too wordy? Fran has this affect too.

Fran gets under your skin and takes root and it’s a place I have no desire to visit any more than maybe twice a year, if that.
